Cable Taps New Kit for EU Market Entry, Speed Race Continues

Certification for new devices sets up launch of new products to European market from Motorola, Cisco, Humax & Thomson signaling continued flow of new products

Brussels - 15 December, 2009: Cable Europe Labs is announcing the certification of new EuroDOCSIS products from Motorola, Cisco, Humax and Thomson which will play a role in the European cable industry's continued emphasis for speed and performance in the marketplace.

"We're happy to end the year on another high note with this new wave of certifications. What you're seeing here is evidence of a continued flow of new products that help cable stay ahead in the speed race," said Cable Europe Labs Managing Director, Malcolm Taylor. "We keep on repeating that having speeds that are 2-6 faster than ADSL offerings require large and continued investments in the latest technology. The certification process is precisely that nexus where the cable providers meet the hardware providers. Speed and scale are outputs of this interaction that translate into high performance."

The products certified by Cable Europe Labs include the following:

EuroDOCSIS 3.0

  • Motorola SB6180E Cable Modem
  • Motorola SBG6580E Cable Modem
  • EuroDOCSIS 3.0 and EuroPacketCable 1.5
  • Cisco EPC3925 EMTA
  • Motorola SBV6180E EMTA

EuroDOCSIS 2.0

  • Humax HDPVR9000C Cable Modem in DVB-C STB
  • Motorola SBG941UE Cable Modem
  • Thomson DCI8x31 Cable Modem in DVB-C STB

Cable operators are engaged in a constant competition with other network providers and strive to get the latest technologies to stay ahead. "There is a curious thing that happens when cable is found in a marketplace. Infrastructure-based competition tends to be healthier and broadband penetration higher. None of this would be possible without the vendors who bring our services to the living rooms and offices across European benefitting from cable service," continued Taylor. "Cable is a key driver in Europe for broadband penetration and continues to spur competition in the telecommunications market."

Between 2003 and 2008, Cable operators invested more than €22bn in the upgrade and build-out of networks and the introduction of new product platforms. Cable Europe Labs certifications for new products are granted following a rigorous testing process in the specialised technology labs of Excentis in Ghent, Belgium.

About Cable Europe Labs Certification and Qualification

Cable Europe Labs Certified or Qualified means that the device has passed a series of tests for compliance with the indicated version of EuroDOCSISTM or EuroPacketCable and has thus demonstrated interoperable functionality with other Cable Europe Labs Certified or Qualified devices. "Cable Europe Labs Certified" is awarded to devices that will be used in a residence or business. "Cable Europe Labs Qualified" is awarded to devices that are used in a cable operator's network. Many of these devices provide other functions or are designed to comply with other specifications, in each case tailored by the manufacturer to meet the growing needs of consumers or cable operators in an evolving communication and entertainment sector. While Cable Europe Labs encourages such innovation and diversity, the phrase Cable Europe Labs Certified or Qualified should not be understood as an endorsement of these other attributes (or that the product is certified to other specifications or versions), which are solely the responsibility of the company making the additional claims.
